India's Mumbai bans new year parties ?

India's financial capital Mumbai has banned new year parties on new year's eve on Friday over concerns of rising COVID-19 cases.

The municipal commissioner of Mumbai has clarified that there is no night curfew on Dec. 31, but crowds will be restricted at public places such as beaches, parks, and marine drive.

India's western state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is its political capital, has allowed programs in closed auditoriums with 50 percent capacity while 25 percent capacity is allowed in open spaces.

Maharashtra has been witnessing a rise in the number of fresh and active COVID-19 cases, and the state's Health Minister Rajesh Tope had termed it as an "alarming situation".

Last week, Mumbai reported 150 cases per day, and the city is now reporting around 2,000 cases per day. India has 77,002 active cases of COVID-19, of which 5,803 active cases are in Mumbai.
